2007-02-19 - 5:34 p.m. The Three Worst Things That Modernity Has Done to Moms* (appearing chronologically) ************ No. 3 - Social Mobility Before social mobility, moms made kids knowing that they would end up with, more or less, exactly the same job they had. Most modern moms are kind enough to say that all they want is for their child to be happy and healthy but, unless their liability (by which I mean kid) is sick, that's generally a lie. What modern moms really want is for their kids to be more successful in life (whatever that means) than they were, and modern moms will be disappointed and/or embarassed and/or pissed off if their liability fails to accomplish this. No. 2 - Public Education Before public education, kids who were five or more years old acted as an extra set of hands to help moms dig up fields and around the home. Really fertile moms were able to use their older kids to take care of their younger ones. Public education took mom's little helpers away, and gave modern moms one less excuse to not have a so-called real job. Consequently, modern moms are prone to feeling over-worked and very, very cranky. No. 1 - Telecommunications Telecommunications are the bane of modern moms who are doing their best to raise decent kids. Modern moms can be really good role models, but they still have to compete with TV and the Internet feeding their kids all of the most underhanded advertising strategies, annoying fads, and idiotic personalities that the world has to offer. And modern moms who decide not to have TV and/or the Internet at home for this very reason will only be resented by their kids, who will watch TV and use the Internet at their friend's houses anyways. ************ * Apologies to Nikky, who is making (or perhaps has already has?!) the best baby that will be born in 2007 (unless Charlie Bucket comes to life, which is unlikely) for the timing of this entry. And gigantic thanks to Nikky as well, who, by having a baby, somehow helps me to feel less obligated to. Three cheers for Nikky!
